Old Tom 어원

1807년, "진; 진의 의인화." 예전에는 모든 진을 의미할 수 있었으나, 나중에는 런던 드라이의 전신인 구식 타입의 단 진을 지칭하게 되었다.

이름의 이유는 불확실하다. 1807년 사용은 "Peg Juniper"의 아들 "Old Tom"에 대한 코믹한 노래에서 유래되었으며, 그가 죽었을 때 그가 진을 위해 tapped 된 통에 넣어졌다는 내용이다.

In a barrel so round then a cock was put in,

And some have since call'd the contents of it gin;

But this we know the liquid therefrom

Is that cure for the cholic, the juice of Old Tom!

이 노래가 용어의 창조인지 아니면 이미 사용 중인 용어를 참조한 것인지 확실히 알 수 없다. 1년 후에 출판된 풍자적인 책에도 "그의 기운을 북돋우는" 말장난 이야기에서 의인화된 Old Tom이 등장한다.

자주 반복되는 설명은 진이 고양이 모양의 디스펜서에서 제공되었기 때문에 그렇게 이름 붙여졌다는 것이며, 이 경우 tom은 tomcat에서와 같이 사용된다. 이것이 일반적인 관행이었다는 증거는 거의 없지만, 18세기 전기에서 실제로 나타난다.

[I] purchased in Moorfields the Sign of a Cat, and had it nailed to a Street Window; I then caused a Leaden Pipe, the small End out about an Inch, to be placed under the Paw of the Cat; the End that was within had a Funnel to it.

At Night I took Possession of my Den, and got up early next Morning to be ready for Custom; it was near three Hours before any body called, which made me almost despair of the Project; at last I heard the Chink of Money, and a comfortable Voice say, “Puss, give me two Pennyworth of Gin.” I instantly put my Mouth to the Tube and bid them receive it from the Pipe under her Paw, and then measured and poured it into the Funnel, from whence they soon received it. 또 다른 이론은 그것이 특정 런던 진 상인, Thomas Chamberlain을 위해 이름 붙여졌다는 것이며, 그는 1800년경에 그의 단골 고객들을 위해 특별한 진을 비축하고 있었기 때문에 "Old Tom's gin"은 특히 품질이 좋은 진이었다. 이 어원은 1860년대에 제시되었다.
